“Teachers believe in the power of education to make a
different to the lives of individuals and to society. As teachers and
principals we are committed to giving students the best education possible for
them to lead fulfilling, purposeful and productive lives. We bring to the role
high levels of professional knowledge expertise and ethical commitment” (Australian
Institute for Teaching and School Leadership Limited. 2008)
A quality teacher must have time management skills, have
their resources prepared, their pedagogy clearly defined and their assessment
practices linked to informing their teaching. Although organisation is the key
every teacher must be flexible to work effectively in a dynamic environment. For
example during my ‘prac’ I had a fractions lesson planned for my class and I
had resources ready for each rotation group including technology planned for
one group but during my introduction and first formative assessment of what my
learners already knew, I realised everything I had planned for was well above
the ability of the learning groups therefore I instantly modified my lesson and
expectations.
Leaners need a supportive classroom environment in order
to learn. Part of this is managing behaviours appropriately. By setting clear
rules, expectation, boundaries and drawing attention to on task behaviour this
can be achieved.
Schools cannot work effectively without the cooperative
efforts of all stake holders. With the introduction of the Australian
Curriculum, teamwork throughout the whole education process is at the heart of
this. No learning manager can or should work alone. The outcomes for learners
are significantly increased if Teamwork is at the centre of all planning,
implementation and moderation.
Being a highly effective communicator is an essential
skill for education professionals. Not just to communicate with students and
parents through many modes, but also to contribute effectively to and within
the educational teams.
Mentor Teacher EPL 5 Internship - “Troy Park has been the
ideal student from CQUniversity. He has learnt all the knowledge and skills
necessary to be a highly effective teacher. He is well organised in preparing
differentiated learning experiences for his students. Troy works successfully
as a team member with his colleagues in year level meetings as well as in the
many roles he undertakes in a wide variety of extra curricula activities”.
